Still Life: Dutch Remastered
It all started with a Dutch ship and an English captain. 401 years ago, Henry Hudson sailed up the river that now bears his name and became one of the first Europeans to impact what would eventually become one of the most populous cities in the world. Since its inception, New York City has embodied numerous characteristics tying it back to the land from which its founders came.
Today, New York City still holds on to the character of its past while forging ahead as a progressive harbinger of its reputation. Representing this synergy beautifully in her work is Alissia Melka-Teichroew, founder of the Brooklyn-based design firm byAMT. Many of her pieces represent a contemporary spin on a traditional form; a witty, edgy translation of a common object without becoming immature or unsophisticated. Many of the accomplished designer’s reinterpretations are currently on display at the Trespa Design Centre in an exhibition titled: Still Life in collaboration with the Eindhoven-based photographer Lisa Klappe. Evoking the compositions made famous by Dutch Masters, this exhibit celebrates the form, texture, and detail of the subjects and their context. Still Life is on display through November 30, 2010 in conjunction with the Netherland-America Foundation’s 5 Dutch Days program taking place in all 5 boroughs of New York.
